Maybe the “dog days of summer” aren’t so bad after all. After all, having a dog or another pet can be fun. And just think, reading about dogs can let you relive or imagine fun with a canine buddy. So tuck a book under your arm to take on a trip or curl up in a cool spot on a hot day with a book about a four-legged friend!
To help foster a love of reading among children, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library provides age-appropriate books to young children by mailing each enrolled child a new book every month. The program allows any child access to books, regardless of income. More than 1600 local communities provide books to about 700,000 children every month through the program.
London-based animator, author, and illustrator Frank Weber originally hails from South Africa, which inspires his works of sly humor, including More Dung! A Beetle Story and The Top Spot. Here Frank shares bug stories of his own childhood to help get kids wondering about insects around the world and drawing a few of their own.
Audrey and Don Wood have collaborated on more than 50 books for children. Their internationally known books — including The Napping House, Heckedy Peg, and King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub (a 1986 Caldecott Honor book) — have been translated into many languages including Gaelic, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, French and Spanish. Both Audrey and Don write and illustrate their books, depending on the particular project.
