Andrea Beaty

Children's Author

Andrea Beaty is the author of the best-selling STEAM-themed picture books about curious kids who love asking questions, inventing, and making things: Iggy Peck, Architect; Rosie Revere, Engineer; and Ada Twist, Scientist. She has also written a rhyming series for very young readers starring Ted the bear, and funny chapter books for middle grade readers (Dorko the Magnificent, Attack of the Fluffy Bunnies series). Curiosity, creativity, innovation and persistence are recurring themes in her children’s books.

Biography

Beaty was raised in a small town in southern Illinois. She was one of six kids and spent her summer days outdoors, looking for adventures in the fields and forests near her home. She was a big reader as a kid and especially loved the Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon mysteries. She later moved on to Agatha Christie books and then the classics.

As a kid, she spent her days being a detective, world explorer, movie star, and spy. Now, as a children’s author, she spends her days pretty much the same way!

Beaty attended Southern Illinois University, studying biology and computer science. Her first job after college was at a computer software company where Beaty helped people with their computer problems (“Did you try turning it off and on again?”) and did a bit of technical writing. She learned later that technical writing was great training for writing for kids because it taught her to be a “fierce self-editor.”

Beaty now lives in Chicago with her family. She visits lots of schools each year to share her love of reading and writing with kids and educators.
