Beaty was raised in a small town in southern Illinois. She was one of six kids and spent her summer days outdoors, looking for adventures in the fields and forests near her home. She was a big reader as a kid and especially loved the Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon mysteries. She later moved on to Agatha Christie books and then the classics.
As a kid, she spent her days being a detective, world explorer, movie star, and spy. Now, as a children's author, she spends her days pretty much the same way!
Beaty attended Southern Illinois University, studying biology and computer science. Her first job after college was at a computer software company where Beaty helped people with their computer problems ("Did you try turning it off and on again?") and did a bit of technical writing. She learned later that technical writing was great training for writing for kids because it taught her to be a “fierce self-editor.”
Beaty now lives in Chicago with her family. She visits lots of schools each year to share her love of reading and writing with kids and educators.
