Writing Stronger Sentences — Part 2: Which Conjunction Works Best?

Heather Adams of Oak Street Elementary School in Franklin, Massachusetts, has her third-grade students practice using the conjunctions “and,” “but,” “or,” and “so.” She provides pre-written short sentences on a topic that her students are familiar with, and and lets them pick the right connector word to combine two thoughts. Notice how she and her students talk through their answers, and discuss ways to rearrange and replace words to make their sentences even stronger.
