The wind howls, making dry leaves skitter on a dark night. Creatures race from door to door asking for treats, threatening tricks. It’s Halloween! Time for some scary and not-so-spooky tales filled with pumpkins, ghosts, and monsters galore.
We’re all artists, though some of us aren’t aware of our talents. Some artists are famous, like Jackson Pollack, Marc Chagall, or Andy Warhol. Others are recognized by their families or their teachers. Some people create art only for themselves. But learning to look and stopping to see brings out the artist in each of us. In these books recommended for children ages 0-9 you’ll read about artists you may know, the artist you already are, or the artist you could be.
For some kids, reading isn’t easy. They might have dyslexia, a learning disability, or just learn differently. Because it helps to know you’re not alone, we’ve gathered together a list of recommended children’s books for kids that feature characters of different strengths and abilities who’ve found they don’t read like everyone else.
Browse our collection of books to help you continue to deepen your knowledge about reading, writing, and effective classroom instruction. You’ll also find books on reading motivation and reading aloud to children.
Movies and books go together like, well, like salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly, green eggs and ham! They’re different but complementary, and can expand the storytelling, the author’s vision, and the audience.
Comparing films and books is just right to get children (and adults) thinking critically. Does the film adaptation stay true to the book? What is gained or lost in the translation from book to film? Does the filmmaker see the characters as you — the reader/viewer — imagined them?
Don’t let your reading stop with just one book. Look for other stories that deal with the same themes. And remember, even though a book may be appropriate for younger children, the film adaptation is sometimes more appropriate for older viewers.
