In When Everybody Wore a Hat, Steig introduces us to his 8-year-old self, as heremembers his parents arguing in four languages, the old wind-up phonograph, shopping, women’s clothing, the old neighborhood, and 1916 children’s fun. Steig’s use of just a few, simple words will appeal to young readers. His illustrations are full of verve, as spontaneous black lines define the characters and their emotions along with, of course, those hats. This book appeals to adults, too, maybe even more so than children!
