Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement, University of Michigan
The model that underlies CIERA's research efforts acknowledges many influences on children's reading acquisition: readers and texts, home and school, and policy and profession. CIERA's task goes beyond finding answers to persistent problems in reading through research to disseminating those solutions to people who impact children's early reading achievement: teachers, teacher educators, parents, policymakers, and others.
Children's Literacy Initiative
Children's Literacy Initiative (CLI) is a nonprofit that works with K-3 teachers to transform instruction so that children can become powerful readers, writers, and thinkers. CONNECT: The Center to Mobilize Early Childhood Knowledge
CONNECT is developing web-based, instructional resources for faculty and other professional development providers that focus on and respond to challenges faced each day by those working with young children with disabilities and their families. The modules help build practitioners’ abilities to make evidence-based decisions.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
To help foster a love of reading among children, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library provides age-appropriate books to young children by mailing each enrolled child a new book every month. The program allows any child access to books, regardless of income. More than 1600 local communities provide books to about 700,000 children every month through the program.
Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program (ECEPDP)
The Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program of the U.S. Department of Education promotes school readiness and improved learning outcomes of young children by providing high-quality professional development programs to improve the knowledge and skills of early childhood educators and caregivers who work in early childhood programs located in high-poverty communities and who serve primarily children from low-income families. ECEPDP projects must utilize evidence-based practice focused on early reading and cognitive development for both the professional development activities and early childhood curricula.

Family Reading Partnership
The Family Reading Partnership is a community organization that promotes early literacy. They are a broad-based, locally grown coalition of individuals, businesses, schools, libraries and other organizations — to "create a culture of literacy" by promoting family reading practices.
The Knowledge Matters Campaign is an advocacy initiative focused on the critical role of knowledge-building. It’s time to restore history, science, geography, art, music, and more to the education we give to all students, especially those least likely to gain such knowledge outside school. Greater comprehension, critical thinking, curiosity, and equality will be our reward. Educators need to devote more time to building vocabulary and knowledge in science, social studies, and the arts — starting in early childhood. Policymakers need to create incentives for districts and schools to make long-term investments in building academic knowledge. Parents need to demand a well-rounded education and read aloud, visit museums, and discuss current events with their children.
National Center for Families Learning
The National Center for Families Learning (formerly the National Center for Family Literacy) inspires and engages families in the pursuit of education and learning together. Since 1989, the NCFL has helped families make educational progress by pioneering and improving family literacy programs. NCFL offers free resources for parents, educators, and community organizations.
National Center for Research on Early Childhood Education (NCRECE)
The NCRECE conducts research, disseminates research findings, and conducts leadership activities aimed at improving the quality of early childhood education across the United States. The center will conduct a professional development study, a randomized controlled evaluation, of the effects of two forms of teacher training. It will also conduct fast response studies to address immediate needs of policymakers.
National Center on Improving Literacy
The National Center on Improving Literacy (NCIL) is a partnership among literacy experts, university researchers, and technical assistance providers, with funding from the United States Department of Education. The center's mission is to increase access to, and use of, evidence-based approaches to screen, identify, and teach students with literacy-related disabilities, including dyslexia.

NECTAC works to strengthen state and local service systems to ensure that children with disabilities (birth through 5 years) and their families receive and benefit from high-quality, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and family-centered supports and services.
National Even Start Association
The mission of the National Even Start Association is to provide a national voice and vision for Even Start Family Literacy programs. The purpose of the Even Start Family Literacy Program is to help break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving the educational opportunities for families. This is accomplished by integrating early childhood education, adult literacy and adult basic education, and parenting education into a unified literacy program. Even Start is implemented nationally through cooperative projects that build on existing community resources, creating a new range of services for children families and adults.
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD): Early Learning and School Readiness Program
The NICHD supports research that specifies the experiences children need from birth to age eight to help them learn to read and ultimately succeed in school. The Child Development and Behavior Branch of the Center for Research for Mothers and Children includes the Early Learning and School Readiness Program, which integrates basic and applied research on early learning and development. Nemours BrightStart! researches, develops and offers evidence-based tools targeting young children at risk for reading failure. Their goal is to effectively instruct children at the very beginning of their reading journey to ensure long-term reading success. In addition to direct services for young children in Florida and Delaware, Nemours BrightStart! helps parents, educators, health care professionals and community leaders understand key concepts and actions needed to promote reading success for all children through a variety of tools, services and resources.

Ready To Learn is public broadcasting's on-going contribution to the fulfillment of the first national education goal — that by the year 2000, all American children will begin school ready to learn. Phonological Awareness and Literacy Screening (PALS)
PALS is funded through Virginia Reads grants and the University of Virginia. The PALS website includes: 1) a section where teachers return their class scores to UVA and receive an immediate summary report, 2) a page where principals and district representatives can receive summaries of their schools' PALS scores, and 3) more than a hundred instructional suggestions and activities, based on PALS screening sections.
Raising a Reader
A program to help families build and sustain reading routines in their homes, with special attention to highest-risk for educational failure. The program helps families understand why sharing books regularly matters; excite children and families with award-winning books each week that build the book sharing routine; and establish connections to libraries to maintain literacy habits at home.
Reach Out and Read
Reach Out and Read is a national program that seeks to make early literacy an integral part of pediatric primary care. Pediatricians encourage parents to read aloud to their young children and give books to their patients to take home at all pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age. Parents learn that reading aloud is the most important thing they can do to help their children love books and to start school ready to learn.
Read to Me
The Read to Me program offers a hands-on series of activities and supervised practice sessions that guide teen parents and other moms to read with their babies. The goals of te program are to: pffer reading as a resource to young moms for pleasure, parenting tips, and psychological insights; stimulate imaginations and initiate early literacy education; and improve the potential for healthy parent-child relationships.

The Campaign is a collaborative effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, states, and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on the most important predictor of school success and high school graduation — grade-level reading by the end of third grade.
