If I Had a Day to Myself
Caylee W.
Bokeelia, FL
Today is the beginning of summer and I can finally go to my favorite place without schedules, teachers, school and homework. I was alone, peaceful and unhurried at my own pace. I slipped on my sandals and was out the door anxious to see if it still would happen when my mind was clear. Then I could feel it beginning. Slow at first then quickly the gardens around my house began to shimmer. I was now in the mystical land where my donkey, Chocolata, changed into a unicorn and the butterflies became fairies. How I enjoy a peaceful day alone. I let my mind break free, daydreaming as I walked through my tropical haven. The forest was full of magical creatures so weird and odd that they were cute. This morning I could hear the singsong of birds and the rustle of the wind against the coconut leaves. Even when it began to rain, the forest provided shelter. The unicorn trotted closely, as my dog sunny transformed into my protector, a centaur. If you were lucky enough you could even see some fairies, disguised as butterflies. I could always hear their tinkling laugh that sounded just like mine. The creatures all reminded me of my own personality spread out between them. I have the fairies kindness and the centaur’s strength and courage. I recognize my gentleness in the unicorn’s soft nuzzling, looking for carrots. As I walked in the forest I felt the power of it and the strength that ran through the trees. Their bark was rough like sandpaper but, the spirit inside them was alive as ever. I would never leave here. Suddenly, the sky appeared speckled with dark thunder clouds. I dashed to the Great Willow. The Great Willow was old and withered holding within it the knowledge of the forest. When I reached her solid branches and sturdy leaves I knew I was safe. I heard the thunder roll and saw the rain refresh the earth, I knew I could never be any place else. This mystical place was my forever home when I am alone.
