United Through Reading

Bookshare

Bookshare, the world's largest accessible digital library for people with print and learning disabilities (such as dyslexia), provides free membership to qualified U.S. schools and students, thanks to an award from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education. Get access to more than 43,000 digital books, textbooks and teacher-recommended readings to help your child succeed and enjoy reading independently.

Center for the Book (Library of Congress)

On behalf of books and reading, the Center for the Book serves as an advocate, a catalyst, and a source of ideas — both nationally and internationally. Its major themes and projects are reading and literacy promotion, the role of books and reading in today's society, the international role of books, the recognition and celebration of America's literary heritage, and the history of books and print culture.

Children's Book Council

The Children's Book Council is a non-profit trade organization dedicated to encouraging literacy and the use and enjoyment of children's books since 1945. The CBC sponsors Young People's Poetry Week and National Children's Book Week each year.

Children's Literacy Initiative

Children's Literacy Initiative (CLI) is a nonprofit that works with K-3 teachers to transform instruction so that children can become powerful readers, writers, and thinkers. CLI's goal is to close the gap in literacy achievement between disadvantaged children and their more affluent peers. CLI provides training and coaching to teachers and administrators, and quality children's books to classrooms.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

To help foster a love of reading among children, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library provides age-appropriate books to young children by mailing each enrolled child a new book every month. The program allows any child access to books, regardless of income. More than 1600 local communities provide books to about 700,000 children every month through the program.

First Book

First Book is a national nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and to own their first new books. The primary goal of First Book is to work with existing literacy programs to distribute new books to children who, for economic reasons, have little or no access to books.

International Children's Digital Library

An online library whose goal is to collect and make available the best historical and contemporary children's books from around the world, in their original language.

Kidsreads.com

Kidsreads, part of The Book Report Network, is a great place for kids to find info about their favorite books and authors, and reviews of the newest titles.

National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) at The Library of Congress

Find audio, braille, and print/braille books for preschool through grade 8 in the NLS catalog. Materials are circulated to eligible borrowers in the U.S. through a national network of cooperating libraries.

Notes from the Horn Book

Notes from the Horn Book, a free monthly e-newsletter, is perfect for parents, teachers, and anyone else looking for good new books for children and young adults. Written by the editors of the distinguished Horn Book Magazine, it is full of news, reviews, and interviews with noteworthy authors and artists.

Public Library Association

PLA's purpose is to advance the development and effectiveness of public library service and public librarians. Read Across America

Initially created as a one-day event to celebrate reading on Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2, NEA's Read Across America has grown into a nationwide initiative that promotes reading every day.

StoryPlace

StoryPlace is an interactive site for children (with both an English and Spanish version), created to provide a virtual experience of going to the library and participating in the types of activities the library offers. StoryPlace currently consists of two libraries, the Preschool Library and Elementary Library, with new activities and themes added each month.

The National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance

Founded by award-winning authors and illustrators, the NCBLA creates and develops special projects and events that promote literacy, children's literature, and libraries.
