Professional Development a Must with New Common Core State Standards, Educators Say

As principal of one of the highest poverty schools in the area, Sherlene McDonald knows the value of professional development training for teachers. School leaders and district leaders, such as principals and superintendents, also benefit from training as that trickles down to the classrooms, she says. Educators say the training is even more important now as new standards in English language arts and math are implemented this year. Alabama joined 48 other states in implementing the Common Core State Standards this year, designed to prepare students for college and careers after high school.
