Before 'The Boxcar Children'

When it comes to opening lines in children's literature, few rise to truly iconic status. The first passage of "The Boxcar Children," about the adventures of four children left homeless by the death of their parents, comes close. Now, as the series celebrates its 70th anniversary, a Chicago publisher is releasing a new title in the series - "The Boxcar Children Beginning," a prequel, written by Newbery Medal-winning author Patricia MacLachlan.
