Local Iowa Reading Program Is for the Books

Tyler Hopkins may not know it yet, but the word recognition competitions he's learned to relish this summer are more than fun and games. Memorizing short words like "up," "am" and "I" are fundamental to early literacy and will help the 6-year-old decipher longer phrases and sentences when he starts first grade at Carlisle Elementary School in August. The instructional strategy is one of several that Carlisle teachers are using to help struggling readers retain -- and in some cases, expand -- their early literacy skills.
