Teacher Leads the Effort to Help Poor Readers
Greenville News (SC)
When visitors ask Maxine Bennett why she pours so much of her life into volunteer teaching, she reaches for two stacks of papers that are never far away. In one stack are about two dozen correspondences from parents of the children her organization — the Augustine Literacy Project — has helped in its summer reading program. In another stack are about a dozen letters from teachers who felt compelled to tell Bennett about the improvements they've seen in those reading students. "This," says Bennett, opening the files, "is why I do it." Bennett's greatest passion is teaching reading skills to children with learning disabilities.
