Reading Rockets offers a wealth of reading strategies, lessons, and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better. Our reading resources assist parents, teachers, and other educators in working with struggling readers who require additional help in reading fundamentals and comprehension skills development.
About the Results
After your child finishes the screening tool, you'll see a score. This score shows if a child's pre-reading skills are weak, strong, or somewhere in between.
The goal of the tool is to show you how to help your child achieve his or her greatest potential. The score does not predict a child's eventual reading or writing abilities.
Please note that none of the results are kept; only you will see your child's score. Once you receive the results, please click the next steps page for links to activity cards and other information to help your child build skills in each of the following areas:
Language awareness
This is a child's understanding of how language works. For example, being able to count the words in a spoken sentence and being able to hear the individual sounds in a spoken word.
Print knowledge
This is a child's understanding of books, letters, and words. For example, understanding that print carries a message, recognizing that people read text rather than pictures, and being aware of how to read a book (right side up, from beginning to end, from left to right, from the top to the bottom of the page).
Emergent writing
This is a child's first efforts to use print in a meaningful way. For example, attempting to write his or her name and knowing how text should look (letters are grouped together into words with spaces between words).
"I am returning to teaching first grade next year and Reading Rockets has kept me inspired!"
