Tax Benefits for Families of Children with LD

February  5, 2007

Did you know that families of children with learning disabilities may be eligible for some valuable tax benefits? There are also tax benefits for families of children with ADHD or other physical, mental, or emotional impairments. According to an article on SchwabLearning , 15-30 percent of families with a child with disabilities have one or more unclaimed tax benefits. Some expenses that may qualify for deductions include: (1) tuition costs for a special school; (2) tutoring expenses for a specially trained and qualified teacher; (3) special therapy (such as sign language instruction, speech therapy, and remedial reading instruction); (4) diagnostic evaluations, and more.

What I've described is just some of the information you'll find in the article by Michael O'Connor . You'll also find links to the IRS publications that describe the benefits in full detail, as well as a reminder to consult your tax advisor to ensure that you're eligible for the benefits.
