The Research-Based Consensus on Learning to Read

Several organizations and researchers have undertaken the task of reviewing the research on reading acquisition and instruction in order to reach consensus about what learning to read requires of students. Find out what this consensus is, and get a list of recent efforts to synthesize research that have contributed to building this consensus.

Learning to read requires:

  • Early experiences to develop concepts of print
  • Early experiences to develop background knowledge
  • Early experiences to develop phonemic awareness
  • Explicit phonics instruction in alphabetic principle
  • Guided practice to develop fluency
  • Direct vocabulary and spelling instruction
  • Reading and writing connections
  • Comprehension strategies instruction
  • Attention to motivation
